The future
ENUM is opening the way for all sorts of applications. The Dutch ENUM zone is all ready to act as a medium for service provision. Now it is up to the market players (telecom firms, Internet and ICT service providers and established and new hardware and software suppliers) to develop applications that utilise ENUM functionality.
In many cases, end users won't actually be aware that an application uses ENUM technology. But, as more countries become ENUM-enabled, the number of applications available will increase. How soon ENUM is established as part and parcel of everyday life is hard to say. Systems are currently being realised in many European countries and the USA. So it is realistic to expect that a large number of ENUM-based applications will come on line in the near future.
